Food Waste Action Week is back from 9鈥15 March 2026, and this year the focus is on helping households get more value from the food they buy by wasting less, using leftovers, and recycling unavoidable scraps. The national campaign is led by Love Food Hate Waste and supported by councils across the UK.

Why reducing food waste matters

Every year, UK households throw away 4.4 million tonnes of edible food鈥攖hat鈥檚 food that could have been eaten. For a typical family of four, this adds up to around 拢1,000 lost each year, as well as 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from wasted food.

Small steps at home can make a big difference for your pocket and for the planet.

Throughout the week, the campaign will share quick, simple actions you can try at home鈥攊deal for busy households. Highlights include:

  • Recycle the rest 鈥 Put unavoidable scraps like peels, teabags and eggshells into your food waste caddy.
